Making Friends Along The Way To The English Channel

I must say, although my decision to swim the English Channel is relatively new, I have already had the pleasure of meeting many truly dedicated people. Well, “meeting” may be a bit strong since I am referring to people I have communicated with via message boards and e-mail, but the atmosphere of “community” is unmistakable. I have had no fewer than three people e-mail me personally to encourage me on my journey. These same people have told me they would be happy to assist me in any way they could. I have also been in touch with two organizations that officially certify any Channel swim: The Channel Swimming Association, Ltd. and the Channel Swimming & Piloting Federation. I have also joined the U.S. Masters Swimming discussion forums so I can interact with other people who have similar interests, specifically, open water swimming. USMS’s “open water swimming” message board is chock full of useful information and helpful people.

I feel confident I am not, and will not, be alone in my quest to swim the English Channel in 2013. The journey will be that more enjoyable because I have tapped into resources and people to help me along the way.

Great goal, John. Suggest adding Anne Cleveland to your Facebook friends. She might be a useful resource for you at some point.
